The Process

The process of flower preservation before casting in resin involves several steps to ensure the flowers maintain their color, shape, and beauty throughout the preservation and casting process. Here’s an overview of the typical steps involved:

The Process:
From start to finish can be 3-6 months

1. Preparing the Flowers

  • Get us the flowers asap: The best flowers to preserve are ones that are in peak condition. Flowers that are too wilted or damaged won’t preserve as well.

  • After deciding your pieces; we prepare the flowers based off the choices: We cut the flowers to the desired length, especially if you're incorporating them into a smaller resin piece.

2. Drying the Flowers

  • Pressing: One common method is to press flowers using flower presses or between sheets of parchment paper, placing them under a heavy weight. This method flattens the flowers, making them perfect for things like jewelry or framed pieces.

  • Air Drying: Some flowers may be air-dried by hanging them upside down in a dry, cool place with good airflow. This process takes longer but is suitable for more dimensional flowers.

  • Desiccants: Another option is using desiccants like silica gel, which absorbs the moisture from the flowers while helping them retain their shape.

3. Sealing the Flowers

  • Spraying: Flowers are often sealed with a floral spray to prevent the petals from becoming brittle or discolored. The spray helps lock in the shape and color of the flowers before they’re embedded in resin.

4. Arranging the Flowers

  • Once dried and sealed, the flowers are arranged in the mold or design. This step is crucial for customizing the piece, as flowers need to be placed thoughtfully to achieve the desired look.

5. Casting in Resin

  • Mixing Resin: The resin (usually a two-part epoxy) is mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the correct ratio of resin and hardener.

  • Embedding the Flowers: The prepared flowers are carefully placed into a mold, and resin is poured over them. Multiple layers of resin may be poured, with each layer allowed to cure before the next layer is added, to avoid the flowers floating or shifting.

6. Curing and Final Touches

  • Curing: The resin is left to cure for several hours or even days, depending on the type of resin used. Once fully cured, the piece is removed from the mold.

  • Finishing: Any excess resin is sanded or polished to create a smooth, clear finish, highlighting the preserved flowers.

After this, you have a beautifully preserved floral resin piece ready for use as jewelry, home decor, or any custom item!
